Alternatively, there are three versions of poker, which have different scoring intervals: lowball, split-pot, and community card.

Several betting rounds are held before a showdown occurs. Each round is a miniature tournament of sorts. During each round, you can bet, fold, or match another player’s bet. Usually, all but one player folds at the end of each round. At the end of the last round, the best hand is decided.

The aforementioned straight is often the winner of the competition, but in other variations there may be more than one winner. Generally, a game of poker will involve a minimum of four betting rounds. After the fourth round, you’ll see your hole cards.

Another variant is the three-card brag, which was a favorite of the gentry during the American Revolution. In this version, you can use as few as three cards, but you have to bet at least one to get into the game.
