Sports Betting 101
Whether you’re a fan of professional or amateur sports, there are many different ways to place a wager on a game. In addition to traditional betting on individual games, sports fans can place wagers on totals during games, such as Over/Under or Totals. This popular betting option can be placed during the game, or after it has already begun. Futures bets, on the other hand, are bets that are placed on events that will happen in the future.
Explaining the basics of sports betting
For those who are new to sports betting, it can be difficult to understand the terminology. Betting on sports involves forecasting the results of an event and placing a bet with a sportsbook. The odds will indicate the probability of an event happening and how much money you can win if you bet on it successfully. The most common bets are moneyline bets, spreads, parlays, and prop bets.
Legalization of sports betting in the U.S.
A recent Supreme Court ruling in favor of legalizing sports betting in New Jersey paved the way for further action in the states. Since then, sports betting initiatives have been introduced in various state legislatures. Meanwhile, several congressional proposals are on the horizon. Earlier this year, Sens. Orrin Hatch and Chuck Schumer co-introduced a comprehensive sports betting bill. In September, the House Judiciary Committee held a formal hearing on the proposal.
Moneyline bets
Moneyline bets are one of the simplest types of sports bets. A bettor backs a team or player that they think will win a game against the odds set by the sportsbook. Moneyline bets can be combined with other bet types to form a parlay. Beginners can start with simple moneyline bets and move up to more complex lines once they gain experience.
Futures bets
Futures bets in sports betting are very different from regular bets because they’re based on future events, often weeks or months away. Consequently, they have more variables and outcomes than regular bets, making them more valuable. The additional risk and potential profit makes them an exciting addition to any sports betting session.
Point spread bets
Point spread bets are a popular way to bet on sporting events. These bets represent a team’s expected victory margin and are made by sportsbooks. The point spread can range from half a point to 50 points, depending on the sport. Most point spreads are used in college and NFL football, as well as NBA and MLB basketball. You can also bet on run lines or puck lines in hockey.
